Collecting log: The first-ever CBS/Sony promotion-only compilation disc to feature Springsteen in Japan

Since this Springsteen track from THE RIVER was never released as
a single in the U.S., it is marked as "Hit-Bound"—a term generally
used in the music industry for songs with strong hit potential that
have not yet officially entered the main music charts. The bottom
image was from the rear sleeve.

While I'm not particularly enthusiastic about collecting various artists' compilation releases, I find it hard to pass up vinyl albums that feature the Boss—especially those intended for promotional use only and released before BORN IN THE U.S.A. The other day, I came across one of these LPs at a local used record store—an old copy released over 40 years ago from CBS/Sony's monthly compilation series ALL AMERICAN TOP 100, which ran from the late 1970s to the mid-1980s. Although I was aware of this promo disc (previously mentioned on 09/19/2015 and 09/17/2017), I had never had the chance to dig it up in-store or find it in an online auction. So, I grabbed this relative rarity just for one coin (= 500 JPY).

The "Promotion copy not for sale 2" videotape, given away for free to those who purchased a TRACKS 4-CD box when it was out in Sweden in November 1998, contained eight live footage clips, of which five were unreleased or available only as promos back then. The remaining three were from THE MUSE CONCERT / NO NUKES (shown is a Japanese low-budget edition released in the 1990s) and VIDEO ANTHOLOGY /1978–88 videos.

The final part of this subject picks up one more compilation item, which is unusual in this blog: a VHS cassette containing NO NUKES material. Of course, I'm not talking about old used videotape copies of the commercially released soundtrack movie with the three live performances (The River, Thunder Road, and the edited Quarter To Three), which are still available in the second-hand market at a cheap expense. I obtained this generic, mediocre-looking cassette videotape in 1999, nearly a quarter century ago. Although its relation to NO NUKES is weak, containing only one clip, I thought this is a good opportunity to write down this video in the blog, as it was certainly rare back then (and still is now), and hard collectors had (have) sought it out for that reason.

These four multi-vinyl radio show programs were released in the 1980s and exclusively featured Springsteen (two from Westwood One and United Station Programming radio networks each). Devil With The Blue Dress Medley (a.k.a. Detroit Medley) from NO NUKES, 1979, was included in all but A CONVERSATION WITH BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN (far left).

In the 1980s, Sringsteen's two live performances from the NO NUKES soundtrack LP (Asylum ML-801; see, for example, 05/04/2019) had often been featured in non-commercial vinyl pressings in the U.S., among which notable were radio show-program discs. Of the two tracks, Devil With The Blue Dress Medley (better known as Detroit Medley among fans) was the obvious choice over Stay with special guests Jackson Browne and Rosemary Butler, included in some Westwood One (WWO) radio network releases, such as a various artists compilation THE ROCK YERAS — PORTRAIT OF AN ERA: HOUR 44* and an exclusive featured program BORN IN THE USA SPECIAL* 3LP, released in 1981 and 1985, respectively.

So, what was an unexpected finding with a NO NUKES-associated collectible, even though that was certainly not something great? Because of the long and intimate relationship with Springsteen, though never serious, I've also been interested in the music of Jackson Browne. A good example is the live rendition of Before The Deluge, the B-side of the custom promotion-only 12-inch featured in the last blog (11/18/2023), which is stunning. All that said, until very recently, I didn't own any of his vinyl and CD releases, except for an early Italian triple-CD bootleg called SPRINGSTEEN, RAITT AND BROWNE (Templar TCD 16), released in 1991 and representing the first of the two-night stand at the Chrisitic Institute Benefit Concerts in Los Angeles (November 16, 1990).

What is the serial number of a new addition (right) to my collection? The "90/100" copy was obtained a few decades
ago (see 05/12/2019). The numbered edition of this rarely-surfaced promotional 12-inch disc, released in late 1979
or early 1980, has long been one of my all-time favorite vinyl collectibles.

First of all, I want to tell you about the current situation of this blog, especially those who have wondered why this site has not been updated for more than half a year. The answer is simple and not serious: although finally infected with COVID-19 four months ago, I'm fine and healthy. However, I just couldn't (and still hardly) have time for my favored things, including sharing information about vinyl and CD collectibles of my favorite artist, for I've been extremely busy with my job since the last post (yes, even though it's just a blog thing, I need to set aside time to do that). Anyway, I thank all of you who cared about the blog's situation and sent me such messages. Even though I had no time to blog, I enjoyed communications and deep discussions with fellow collectors, especially in the U.S. and Europe, on official rare collectible discs and old vinyl bootlegs.

Collecting log: CBS/SONY's bizarre 12" DISCO sampler with Springsteen's track

Probably, nobody would think of a Springsteen track on the shown sampler. The front sleeve is misleading since any artists and groups indicated are not featured on this promo compilation disc (check the tracklist on the right). The catalog number (YAPN 23) is not found anywhere on the sleeve (including the spine), and the tracklist is like a promotional flyer, printed on a separate sheet and taped on the plain yellow rear sleeve. So, I guess this color-illustrated sleeve was not specific to this particular pressing but commonly used for the "Super Disco Sound" series (i.e., this issue is Volume 19).

On the 200th-anniversary blog post, plus Collecting log: recent miscellaneous purchases under COVID-19 (2022)

This year-end post marks the 200th entry I've written about my collection and started knowledge sharing in the last seven years plus four months. It might be crazy to think about what I've done: sticking around a single foreign artist peaking decades ago and blogging 200 times exclusively about his collector's items in a non-native language from the Far East island of Asia. Initially, the blog was a way to relax, forget work, stop worrying about things, and refresh my mind. I also intended to use the blog as a collecting log and memorandum to what I think and notice of the collectibles I obtained over the years (and that's why I call my blog "log"). However, doing blog things has become more than those. It is a pure joy to communicate with fellow collectors and fans worldwide. I'm very grateful to all of you for visiting, reading, and commenting. Fortunately, I have never received any negative or demotivating comments or feedback on what I wrote in this blog, which I really appreciate.

Should I open a used record shop?  These are all U.S.-pressed copies of DARKNESS ON THE EDGE OF TWON LP (Columbia JC 35318) I have used to conduct a comprehensive survey to decipher unusual dead-wax matrix inscriptions, such as PK, PMI, PMN, PN, PV, and PPP (see a series of blog articles here). All are cheap-second hand, though.

My NO NUKES collectibles. Check four consecutive posts (04/25/2019 to 05/12/2019) on vinyl collectibles and another post (11/12/2020) on the laser disc. A white die-cut sleeve release on the lower row, second from the right, is a promotion-only interview disc titled MUSE VIEWS (Musicians United for Safe Energy, Inc. PROMO 12-1-79), although it does not feature Springsteen. I don't own the physical CD release of The Live Archive series from Nugs.net.

For me, 2021 had started with high anticipation for the official release of the two-night footage from the NO NUKES concerts in 1979 ever since I saw the promotional video clip for Letter To You  (see 11/12/2020). Fortunately, the year ended with what I anticipated for, although I craved the full shows rather than the excerpts from both nights. Old-timers know that before MTV's launch in the early 1980s and the success of BORN IN THE U.S.A., how scarce it was to have opportunities to watch his live performances on television that was the primary visual media, especially outside the U.S. (e.g., Even the three official tracks from the NO NUKES movie were rarely aired here).

The controversial and tumultuous Tokyo Olympics was over, and as exactly predicted, we suffered from the fifth wave of COVID-19, the worst so far that has hit all over Japan. Although I live far from the Metropolitan area, the number of infected people was seriously significant and peaked at the highest ever in late August. As a result, the national state of emergency here was extended by the end of September, limiting my collecting activity low and hunting exclusively on the internet until recently. It was just two weeks ago that I was able to visit a "physical" record store for the first time since the post-fourth wave period in late June this year. Nevertheless, I obtained some interesting items that may be worth blogging about as miscellaneous collectibles. In this post, I show two such examples (CD and vinyl albums) released here in the 1980s from CBS/SONY Inc. (Tokyo, Japan), both of which are promotion-only compilations featuring or involving Springsteen. These were new to me and have not thus far been listed in the Discogs database and most probably in others as well.

Collecting log: Blinded By The Light U.S. 7" singles (Part 4 of 4) ー Puzzled by the booklets accompanied by the Play:Back issues

Play:Back booklet Issues 16 (left) and 17 (right). The former contains articles on Springsteen and Andy Pratt, and their songs are released together on a Play:Back 7" EP (Columbia AS 45) in January 1973. However, it is the latter (where neither artist is mentioned explicitly) that is accompanied by most record copies in circulation if they still retain a booklet.

Collecting log: Blinded By The Light U.S. 7" singles (Part 3 of 4) ー Puzzled by the booklets accompanied by the Play:Back issues

Generally, Springsteen's first official 7" single is regarded Blinded By The Light / Angel (US Columbia 4-45805), released close to a half-century ago today (02/23/1973) and cut in a shortened length (3 : 58) from the debut album GREETINGS FROM ASBURY PARK, N. J. (US Columbia KC 31903). The white-label version of mono/stereo coupling was also issued for promotional purposes. Both editions have earned their status as collectors' items, with the regular stock being extremely difficult to obtain due to the scarcity and a high cost (sometimes reaching a four-digit U.S. dollar price on the collectors' market). However, as you collectors know, the phrase "first official 7" single" is not true in a strict sense because more than a month in advance of the regular release (01/12/1973), the full-length, unedited version (5 : 05) already appeared on a special 7-inch sampler (US Columbia AS 45) as part of Columbia/Epic Records' program called Play:Back.

Among the three advanced promotion-only LP records CBS/SONY Japan released in the 1980s (upper row), the LIVE/1975-85 sampler (center) was treated distinctively from the other two, with the impressive sleeve artwork that is comparable to those of the standard first-pressing issues (lower row).

Undoubtedly, the collecting value of THE LEGEND COMES ALIVE Japanese compilation LP primarily lies in its superb sleeve artwork. The appearance of its front cover is in marked contrast to those of the advanced promotion-only LP editions (in a plain white sleeve with one or two unique stickers; see the picture above) for BORN IN THE U.S.A. and TUNNEL OF LOVE that immediately precede and follow the LIVE box, respectively. Some may wonder how CBS/SONY was able to issue such a Japan-exclusive, custom-color sleeve featuring his gorgeous portrait, especially considering the unusually urgent release to the domestic market to rival the imports such as those from the U.S. The answer is found in the blog written by the aforementioned ex-company staff (see Part Two), if you can read and understand Japanese (I refrain from disclosing it in my blog for a potentially sensitive reason). And finally, I close this topic with my memory when I got the first bootleg of the LIVE-box outtakes.

Is there anything my collection is missing?

Because of a multi-disc box package, LIVE/1975-85 was downsized to be issued as a single LP commercially in South America (Argentine, Brazil, and Venezuela) and for promotional use only in North America (the U.S. and Canada), continental Europe (Holland and Spain), and Asia (Japan). Notably, the four pressings from the three Latin Americas and the Far East exhibit substantial differences in title, sleeve design, and track selection/configuration from the standard North American/European edition (although the Dutch issue is unique in that it includes the original booklet and is serially numbered on a front sleeve golden sticker). The cassette-tape counterparts to these LP samplers were also released in three of these four countries (except Venezuela) and Uruguay. Japan may initially have received high praise overseas for keeping low the number of COVID-19 contagions. However, the unusual lifestyle continues, and the infected people increase to serious levels in some metropolitan areas these days, especially after introducing government-backed discount programs for food-service and travel industries to boost the economy hopefully. Yes, we recognize that the third wave has come here. Although not able to get deep into blogging activities under the current situation, my collecting effort has not been discontinued. Here is a brief summation of the selected recent results (mostly through domestic online auction).

LETTER TO YOU  (Columbia19439803801, Euro-pressed black & white splatter vinyl)

While I ordered the splatter version (center) from Sony Music Shop, the grey vinyl (right) was obtained at Tower Records (available there probably at the cheapest in Japan when ordering). A newspaper clipping on the left features the album review from the morning edition (November 4th, 2020) of the Asahi Shinbun, a major Japanese newspaper.

Until the commercial release in 1995 of GREATEST HITS (Columbia 7464-67060-1), compilation albums of Springsteen's studio-recording works were strictly limited for promotional use only (I'm talking about those containing his material exclusively). The very first examples in both vinyl and CD formats came out from Japan: the 1978's LP LAST AMERICAN HERO FROM ASBURY PARK, N.J. (CBS/SONY YAPC 95; 09/19/2015 and 01/28/2017) and the 1990's double CD BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN 70's TO 80's [sic] (better known as its subtitle THE FUTURE OF ROCK'N ROLL; CBS/SONY XADP 90009-10), two of the all-time greatest collectibles. The LAST AMERICAN ... LP, now impossibly hard to find, contains 10 songs culled from his first three albums:

• SIDE 1: It's Hard To Be A Saint In The City / Blinded By The Light / Spirit In The Night / Rosalita (Come Out Tonight) / New York City Serenade
  
• SIDE 2: Thunder Road / Born To Run / She's The One / Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out / Jungleland

Promotion-only vinyl and CD compilation albums before the release of GREATEST HITS in 1995. All the CD titles except for the Japanese FUTURE OF ROCK'N ROLL (2CDs) appear during 1992-93 primarily to support and promote HUMAN TOUCH / LUCKY TOWN. These CDs are pressed in Canada, Japan, Sweden (two editions), and the U.K., but curiously no releases from the U.S.

Promotion-only releases are one of the major targets for collecting and hunting vinyl and compact discs. In the true sense, AS REQUESTED AROUND THE WORLD (Columbia AS 978) marks the first U.S. custom-made promotion-only LP concerning the artwork design of the album sleeve and track-list configuration, both of which are exclusively unique to this release. One might think that the BORN TO RUN script cover (Columbia no number) and the picture disc edition of DARKNESS ON THE EDGE OF TOWN (Columbia JC 35318) represent the earlier examples in this release category. To me, however, these two vinyl rarities can be viewed rather as variants to respective regular releases because of identical track configuration and basically the same cover artwork design, although the former came as not a promo but the advanced disc (test pressing) in a special press-kit package which was sent out to reviewers and record executives rather than to radio stations for airplay.

Back in the early 1980s when I started collecting, it was impossible to find promotion-only releases from legitimate sources, whether domestic or imported (CBS/SONY or Columbia Records), at local record stores in my hometown and nearby areas. So, to me, mail order was the only practical option to obtain these official rare collectibles (it was way before we used the internet!). I remember that a copy of this promo LP was generally sold around between $40 and $60 (plus international postage) when ordered from the U.S. dealers. On the other hand, once imported into Japan, it usually fetched prices over $100 when becoming available at the collectors' market. As I wrote in the last post (05/10/2020), I got my first copy on my occasion to stay in the U.S. a few decades ago.

The outbreak of Corona Virus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) has severely affected our lives and life, bringing this world to unforeseen stagnation. Frustratingly, the current epidemic situation in Japan shows no sign of improvement in controlling the virus, which seriously restricts our daily life. I believe many Japanese would agree that this is not only attributed to the disastrous delay in the Government's action against COVID-19 in favor of the now-postponed Tokyo Olympic/Paralympic Games and inbound tourism-supported domestic economy, but also due to the indisputable incompetence of our Prime Minister, as we often see in hereditary politicians.

During these stay-home days, I attempted to reorganize my vinyl collection and
found a total of four copies of my favorite record with the great sleeve (I had
thought that I had three). One copy came with a plain inner bag on which a
backstage pass was pasted for a French concert (Montpellier, April 24, 1981) 

During the past months, my most serious concern directly associated with COVID-19 had been my daughter, who stayed and studied in continental Europe for more than half a year via an exchange student program. Sadly against her will, (the Japanese side of) the university authorities forced her to cease her study abroad, with her ambition still unfulfilled, and urged her to fly back home right in the middle of global confusion and threat caused by COVID-19!  Because of this, I had had no motivation to write blog posts at all since the last one, at least until recently when I saw her safe return and the termination of the subsequent two-week quarantine period that was imposed on returnees from outside of the country.

Collecting log: Top 3 collectible acquisitions in 2019 (Part 1 of 3)

Well this is a little bit belated, but here I select last year's best acquisitions. In the first half of the last year, collecting-wise, it was depressing for me mostly due to the frequent frustrating issue caused by eBay Global Shipping Program (see here). In the second half of the last year, contrastingly, I was brightened by the unexpected acquisition of a holy grail 7" vinyl pressing (although I admit I usually don't put much effort into hunting 7" collectibles; see Part 3). During this term, I also obtained a few items that had long been on my want list but I just had not dug out (this post) or I had had no luck finding at a reasonable price (see Part 2).
